DKFZ is one of Germanys leading institutes in cancer research. The research topics cover various disciplines, from tumour and biology, immunology, genomics, medical physics in both radiology and radiation therapy, to clinical collaboration with the National Center for Tumour diseases (NCT) and the university of Heidelberg medical school. About 1300 Scientists from all over the world and various backgrounds, including roughly 400 PhD students, work together with administrative and technical staff on current topics of cancer research. The department of translational radiation oncology has a strong focus on integrative omics based analysis and the identification of molecular biomarkers and predictors, that provide therapy surrogates for radiotherapy. Furthermore, due to the close cooperation with the Heidelberg Ion Therapy Center (HIT), we focus on Ion-based radiotherapy, namely proton and carbon. With respect to the topic of Radiomics, we concern ourselves with the development of image analysis software, especially in the area of PET, dynamic MRI and diffusion MRI. Our group has established a software platform for using machine Learning algorithms (Random Forest) for prediction of tumour growth patterns and recurrence, based on multimodal functional and metabolic imaging.
